Commercial vehicle construction involves designing and manufacturing durable, lightweight, and functional interiors that withstand frequent use and harsh environments.
Here’s an overview of the components used:
1. Materials for Cabinets & Panels
- Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP):
Strong, lightweight, and resistant to impact, chemicals, and corrosion, it is commonly used for cabinets, wall panels, and ceilings. It offers good insulation and easy cleaning. - ABS Plastic & Polypropylene:
Lightweight, impact-resistant, and cost-effective. Commonly used for storage compartments, dashboards, and trim panels. Available in various textures and colours for a professional finish. - Aluminium & Composite Panels:
Used for reinforcing structural elements. It can be combined with plastic to improve strength while keeping weight low. - Plywood with Laminate Coating:
Used in heavy-duty applications (e.g., shelving and flooring). Provides durability but is heavier than plastic alternatives. - Aluminium Profiles:
Aluminium extrusions are commonly used to build the frame of vehicle cabinets. These aluminium profiles are strong, lightweight and impervious to moisture.
2. Locks & Latches
Compression Latches
Compression latches are vital in high-vibration environments such as vehicles. They tightly lock a cabinet and ensure doors stay securely closed during transit.
Compression latches like our Model 06 ML can be used internally and externally. Vehicle builders typically use a gasket seal on the enclosure for external use. This combination of gasket and compression lock provides a weatherproof seal.
Push-to-close Latches
Push-to-close latches are typically found in cabinets and storage compartments. A push-to-close function means the door is automatically locked when closed.
Grabber Latches
Grabber latches are used for lightweight panels and access doors. They are ideal for low-security applications.
3. Hinges
Concealed Hinges
Concealed hinges are mounted internally in a cabinet or enclosure, improving aesthetics and security, protecting the hinge from moisture, and reducing snags.
Detent Hinges and Torque Hinges
Detent hinges allow doors to stay open automatically. Useful in emergency vehicles and delivery vans.
Detachable Hinges
Allows for quick removal of doors or panels. Useful for modular or serviceable areas.
4. Handles
Grab handles are often required in vehicles. These handles may be used to assist in entry and exit of the vehicle, or in the case of emergency vehicles, they may be used to hold on to while underway.
